Does an international thriller these days really need a villain with a Middle Eastern accent to be compelling? Anyone who's seen "The Constant Gardener" will understand what a uninformed question that is. The villians in this tale of intrigue are shadowy, their motives hidden, and their ethnic backgrounds most likely the same as ours. And the movie couldn't feel more fresh or of the moment. Set largely in the African country of Kenya, with detours to London and Amsterdam, the movie has the ambition, and patience, to examine high-level diplomacy, corporate malfeasance in the Third World (specifically pertaining to the pharmaceutical industry), and the nobility and naivete of political activism, not to mention a good, old-fashioned love story, with a horrible murder thrown in for good measure. That's a lot of balls in the air, but the director Fernando Meirelles, a Brazilian who directed 2002's well-received "City of God," and his prestigious cast led by Ralph Fiennes and Ralph Weisz have each risen to the occasion to deliver some of the best work of their careers. The result in turn is one of the best movies of this year.
